Greenpeace, which is an environmental organization. Has reported that a considerable portion of the donated options for clothing actually fails in obtaining a “second life”.
To illustrate this they conducted a research experiment by placing geolocation devices on a total of twenty nine garments – that were deposited in various municipal containers – within the stores of Mango and Zara.
After monitoring the donated clothes for about four months. They found that only one item had been confirmed and purchased – from one of Romania’s second hand store.
All of the remaining items still continue to travel and have not reached their final destinations yet. They traveled to countries like Pakistan, Chile, Togo, India, but haven’t been purchased yet. A few of the remaining clothes still remain in warehouses of various industrial estates of Spain or are just untraceable.
This research basically highlights the need for an urgent change in the production of clothing and its consumption model. Greenpeace further emphasized in their statement that there is also a need of avoiding temporary and false measures to delay this transition.
